This monument would honor the United States&#8217; centennial of independence and the friendship with France. French sculptor <a id=\"CP___PAGEID=3792147,\/stli\/learn\/historyculture\/auguste-bartholdi.htm,29863|\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nps.gov\/stli\/learn\/historyculture\/auguste-bartholdi.htm\">Auguste Bartholdi<\/a> supported Laboulaye&#8217;s idea and in 1870 began designing the statue of &#8220;Liberty Enlightening the World.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>While Bartholdi was designing the Statue, he also took a trip to the United States in 1871. During the trip, Bartholdi selected Bedloe&#8217;s Island as the site for the Statue. The arm holding the torch was completed in 1876 and shown at the Centennial Exposition in Philadelphia. The head and shoulders were completed in 1878 and displayed at the Paris Universal Exposition. The entire Statue was completed and assembled in Paris between 1881 and 1884. National Park Service, Statue of Liberty NM.<\/div>\n<div id=\"cs_control_3801338\">\n<div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>To the United States<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>After the Statue was presented to Levi P Morton, the U.S. minister to France, on July 4, 1884 in Paris, it was disassembled and shipped to the United States aboard the French Navy ship, <em>Is\u00e8re<\/em>. The Statue arrived in New York Harbor on June 17, 1885, and was met with great fanfare. National Park Service, Statue of Liberty NM.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div id=\"cs_control_3801346\">\n<div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Assembly<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Once the pedestal was completed in 1886, the Statue was reassembled with surprising speed by a fearless construction crew &#8211; <strong>many of whom were new immigrants.<\/strong> The first piece of the Statue to be reconstructed was Alexandre-Gustave Eiffel&#8217;s iron framework. The rest of the Statue&#8217;s elements followed without the use of scaffolding &#8211; all construction materials were hoisted up by steam driven cranes and derricks. In order to sculpt the Statue&#8217;s skin Eiffel used the repouss\u00e9 technique developed by Eugene Viollet-le-Duc. This technique was the process of molding light-weight copper sheets by hammering them onto the Statue&#8217;s hallowed wooden framework. The last section to be completed was the Statue of Liberty&#8217;s face which remained veiled until the Statue&#8217;s dedication. Although Fort Wood remained on Bedloe&#8217;s Island, it was not an obstacle in the design, construction, or reassembly of the Statue of Liberty. The day&#8217;s wet and foggy weather did not stop some one million New Yorkers from turning out to cheer for The Statue of Liberty. De Lorient au Havre ou de Cherbourg \u00e0 TOULON en passant par Rochefort, aucun grand port militaire ne sera oubli\u00e9.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1884 \u2013 VOYAGE AU TONKIN<br \/>\n<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Le\u2026\u2026..1884, la fr\u00e9gate quittera le port de Saint Nazaire pour le Tonkin (partie septentrionale du Vi\u00eatnam actuel) et ses\u00a0 principaux ports, Ha\u00efphong, Tourane et Saigon qu&#8217;elle sillonnera durant presqu\u2019une ann\u00e9e avant de revenir en France.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/la-memoire-minahouets.reseaudesassociations.fr\/cities\/997\/images\/lke0li9cjhs85h6.jpg\" width=\"300\" height=\"202\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Carte de la Cochinchine<\/p>\n<p><strong>DE NEW YORK A LOCMIQUELIC<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>1885 &#8211; SA PERIODE DE GLOIRE<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>C\u2019est en mai 1885 que le navire arrivera au port de Rouen afin d\u2019y embarquer la c\u00e9l\u00e8bre statue de la Libert\u00e9. Il chargera \u00e0 son bord 210 caisses, 80 tonnes de cuivre et 20 tonnes d&#8217;acier qu\u2019il livrera \u00e0 New York le 19 juin 1885 apr\u00e8s une travers\u00e9 difficile ponctu\u00e9e de plusieurs temp\u00eates en Atlantique nord.<\/p>\n<p>C&#8217;est au capitaine de vaisseau Gabriel LESPINASSE de SAULNE, n\u00e9 \u00e0 Toulouse le 11 juillet\u00a0 1846, que le gouvernement Fran\u00e7ais confiera cette mission honorifique de porter au peuple am\u00e9ricain la statue. Une reproduction miniature de la statue lui sera offerte lors de l\u2019inauguration.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/la-memoire-minahouets.reseaudesassociations.fr\/cities\/997\/images\/gqx4r9f2f4pat97.png\" width=\"214\" height=\"155\" \/><\/p>\n<p>La statue de la Libert\u00e9 de Bartholdi<\/p>\n<p><strong>SON ARRIVEE DEVANT LOCMIQUELIC<br \/>\n<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>De retour \u00e0 Brest \u00e0 l&#8217;automne 1885, la fr\u00e9gate \u00ab\u00a0Is\u00e8re\u00a0\u00bb y subira une grande refonte en 1904, durant laquelle elle recevra une nouvelle machine avant sa remise en service. En 1908, le navire marche mal et vu l\u2019\u00e9tat de sa coque, sa mise \u00e0 la retraite est d\u00e9cid\u00e9e. C\u2019est \u00e0 l\u2019arsenal de Rochefort que son d\u00e9sarmement aura lieu en d\u00e9cembre 1909.<\/p>\n<p>Condamn\u00e9e en mars 1911, sa coque, remorqu\u00e9e par le \u00ab\u00a0RENNE\u00a0\u00bb, quittera Rochefort en avril 1924 en direction de Lorient o\u00f9 elle servira de ponton. Durant son transfert, le convoi sera pris dans une temp\u00eate et devra rel\u00e2cher \u00e0 Quiberon le 27 avril 1924.<\/p>\n<p>A son arriv\u00e9e \u00e0 l\u2019arsenal de Lorient le 29 avril 1924, elle sera utilis\u00e9e comme ponton sur la rive droite du Scorff jusqu\u2019en juin 1940 date \u00e0 partir de laquelle elle servira \u00e0 l\u2019accostage des U-Boat Allemands. Elle verra \u00e9galement accoster les canonni\u00e8res \u00ab\u00a0Audacieuse\u00a0\u00bb et \u00ab\u00a0Surveillante\u00a0\u00bb. En mars 1941, le ponton \u00ab\u00a0Is\u00e8re\u00a0\u00bb quittera d\u00e9finitivement les rives du Scorff pour celles du Ter<a href=\"http:\/\/la-memoire-minahouets.reseaudesassociations.fr\/default\/#_ftn1\">[3]<\/a> et sa sombre base de sous-marins o\u00f9 elle sera touch\u00e9e par les bombardements du 13 f\u00e9vrier 1943.<\/p>\n<p>Sabord\u00e9e par les Allemands en 1945, puis dynamit\u00e9e en 1990 afin de permettre l\u2019agrandissement et l\u2019acc\u00e8s du port de plaisance de Locmiqu\u00e9lic sa coque g\u00eet toujours par \u2026. m\u00e8tres de fond dans le petit chenal face au m\u00f4le de sainte Catherine.<\/p>\n<p>Dans un extrait du journal \u00ab\u00a0Le T\u00e9l\u00e9gramme\u00a0\u00bb en date du 3 mars 2009, on y d\u00e9couvre que\u00a0: <em>\u00ab\u00a0\u00a0gr\u00e2ce au travail de passionn\u00e9s, l\u2019Is\u00e8re\u00a0continue de vivre en 3D sur les \u00e9crans de l&#8217;association \u2026\u2026\u2026\u2026 mus\u00e9e sous-marin MSMPL..\u00a0<\/em>\u00bb .
