Peter Max, back in Stone Harbor, \u2018loves\u2019 his \u2018perfect\u2019 style<\/h1>\n

Celebrated artist Peter Max has painted presidents, princes, dignitaries, celebrities, still lifes, landscapes and Lady Liberty.<\/strong> Moving beyond the canvas, Max has even embellished cruise ships, racecars and airplanes \u2014 all in his unique, one-of-a-kind style.<\/p>\n

\n

Now Stone Harbor\u2019s Ocean Galleries will present the artist\u2019s work in the exhibit \u201cPeter Max Celebrates America the Beautiful,\u201d 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Friday through Monday, July 1 to 4. As a bonus, Max will be at the gallery to sign purchased artwork from 7 to 10 p.m. Saturday, July 2, during which time a public reception will be held in his honor; and from 1 to 4 p.m. Sunday, July 3.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

Max has a long history with Ocean Galleries, having shown his work there for more than 15 years.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

\u201cPeter has become like family to us,\u201d says Kim Miller, owner of Ocean Galleries. \u201cOur clientele love him. And it\u2019s especially fun for us to watch as new generations are introduced to his timeless artwork.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

Max\u2019s shows are unlike any other the gallery hosts, says Miller. \u201cThere is an energy and a rock \u2019n\u2019 roll atmosphere that make the exhibition an exciting experience, whether you are viewing his artwork for the first time or back again to see what new masterpieces he has created.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

An illustrious career<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

Max\u2019s career as a commercial artist and painter spans decades and continents.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

Having spent his first 10 years in China, Max has also lived in Tibet, Paris and Israel before finally making his home in New York City. Naturally, all of these places influenced his creativity, but they all merged together to create the style that is uniquely his, says Max.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

\u201cLiving in all these places was unbelievable,\u201d he says. \u201cMy style evolved to become the style, and I can\u2019t say which place had an effect on it. I don\u2019t know where my style began, but it became very permanent.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

Psychedelic illustrations; a bright, bold, basic color palette; and flamboyant brushstrokes typify the \u201cPeter Max style.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

Studio is a playground<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

When asked if he ever had a creative challenge, Max quickly replies: \u201cNo. I\u2019m always creative. I\u2019ve hardly ever had a roadblock, and if I did, I got over it in a minute. My style is always there. I love it. It\u2019s always perfect for me.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

And his style has been ideal for celebrities and dignities, many of whom Max has painted. Among dignitaries, he painted U.S. President Ronald Reagan, Prince Rainier, Mikhail Gorbachev, Margaret Thatcher and the Dalai Lama.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

Of these, the Dalai Lama had a profound effect on him. \u201cMeeting the Dalai Lama was a turning point for me. It was a highlight,\u201d Max says. \u201cI\u2019m a very spiritual man, and meeting him was just such an honor.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

Max is a pupil of hard work. He is in his studio every day \u201cfrom morning until night.\u201d But he doesn\u2019t consider the studio work. Rather, \u201cIt\u2019s my playground,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

As for his legacy, Max is simply happy to take one day at a time. \u201cI just love what I do,\u201d he says. \u201cEvery single day is a hit for me. I just do it and I love it from day to day.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
