CALISI<\/b><\/p>\n<p>It was created to fill a temporary void Downtown, but ten years later, it\u2019s finding new purpose \u2014 and a new venue.<\/p>\n<p>The 9\/11 Tribute Center, established a decade ago by victims\u2019 families as America awaited a formal memorial to the 2001 terrorist attacks, recently announced plans to move to a new location at 88 Greenwich St. in order to expand its mission, exhibits and programs.<\/p>\n<p>The center has welcomed 4 million visitors in the ten years since it opened at its current location at 120 Liberty St., according to co-founder Lee Ielpi, president of the September 11th Families\u2019 Association.<\/p>\n<p>The new 9\/11 Tribute Center is expected serve up to 1 million visitors every year.<\/p>\n<p>The expanded venue is intended to facilitate a larger mission for the center in the future \u2014 going beyond simply mourning the victims of the 9\/11 attacks, to highlighting the inspiring national response to the catastrophe, and encouraging a new generation to join in the spirit of community service.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs we focus on tomorrow, we have to let young people know that through an understanding of 9\/11 they can learn the importance of service and contributing to their communities,\u201d said Ielpi, a former firefighter who lost his firefighter son in the World Trade Center collapse. \u201cThey can remember and honor those who were lost on 9\/11 by participating in acts of service. The expanded exhibits and programs will allow people from around the world to understand and then commit to acts of service to make a difference in their communities.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Since it opened in 2006, the center has offered visitors to the World Trade Center area a place to connect with people from the 9\/11 community \u2014\u00a0 survivors, family members of lost loved ones, first responders, and people who live and work in Lower Manhattan.<\/p>\n<p>The goal now is to perform this mission and deliver their message to a greater number of visitors so they can learn more about the events of 9\/11, the identity of 2,973 people killed in the attacks, the unprecedented rescue and recovery operations and the tremendous spirit of support and generosity that arose after the attacks. They found \u2014 nothing.<\/p>\n<p data-para-count=\"284\" data-total-count=\"536\">No memorial. No commemoration. No exhibition. Little signage and less interpretation. Just impenetrable construction barriers, crowded sidewalks, hawkers selling lurid photo books and Harry John Roland, a self-appointed guide whose cry was: \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/articles.latimes.com\/2011\/aug\/17\/nation\/la-na-wtc-man-20110818\">History, don\u2019t let it be a mystery!<\/a>\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-para-count=\"218\" data-total-count=\"754\">The <a href=\"http:\/\/tributewtc.org\/\">9\/11 Tribute Center<\/a> stepped into this void. The private, nonprofit, ad hoc center was founded in part by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2005\/09\/09\/nyregion\/the-human-voice-of-911.html\">Lee Ielpi<\/a>, a retired firefighter whose son, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2001\/11\/22\/nyregion\/nation-challenged-portraits-grief-victims-dreaming-big-growing-closer-making.html?pagewanted=3\">Jonathan Lee Ielpi<\/a>, also a firefighter, was killed in the attack.<\/p>\n<p data-para-count=\"275\" data-total-count=\"1029\">The center opened in 2006 on a shoestring budget in a former delicatessen at 120 Liberty Street, opposite ground zero. George E. Pataki, who was then the governor of New York, said the 9\/11 Tribute Center would offer an \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2006\/09\/06\/nyregion\/06tribute.html\">interim destination<\/a>\u201d until the real museum opened.<\/p>\n<p id=\"story-continues-1\" data-para-count=\"298\" data-total-count=\"1327\">Here it is, two years after the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.911memorial.org\/about-museum\">National September 11 Memorial Museum<\/a> opened. Not only is the tribute center still around, it is also to move into a new space nearby, at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thorequities.com\/portfolio\/88-greenwich-st-new-york-ny-10006-us\">88 Greenwich Street<\/a>, where it will occupy 35,000 square feet, almost three times as much as it has now. The lease runs 36 years.<\/p>\n<p data-para-count=\"81\" data-total-count=\"1408\">The announcement is to be made on Tuesday. (Jonathan Ielpi\u2019s turnout coat and helmet are part of this section.) The next third will deal with how survivors dealt with their loss and trauma through philanthropic and voluntary work. And the final third will invite visitors to consider how they might be of service to their own communities.<\/p>\n<p data-para-count=\"127\" data-total-count=\"2166\"><strong>\u201cWe can\u2019t change the past,\u201d Mr. Ielpi said. \u201cI can\u2019t bring my son back. But we can certainly change the future.\u2019\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p data-para-count=\"399\" data-total-count=\"2565\">As important as the space is, the Tribute Center will also continue to organize tours of the Sept. 11 memorial. Its 812 volunteer guides are related to victims of the attack; or they responded to the attack as firefighters, police officers or other emergency workers; or survived the attack themselves; or helped with the cleanup and recovery of the trade center site; or lived downtown at the time.<\/p>\n<p data-para-count=\"195\" data-total-count=\"2760\">\u201cOur volunteers not only share their experience of that day,\u201d Ms. Adams-Webb said, \u201cbut how they\u2019ve grown from that and where they\u2019ve come to today \u2014 how it\u2019s shaped their lives.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-para-count=\"396\" data-total-count=\"3156\">The annual number of visitors to the center peaked in 2011 at 550,000, Ms. Adams-Webb said. Last year, it was 400,000. Paradoxically, tourism in the neighborhood is greater than ever. But the tight confines of the center\u2019s current space prevent it from accommodating large tour buses, she added. That is one reason \u2014 besides the expiration of the lease at 120 Liberty Street \u2014 it is moving.<\/p>\n<p data-para-count=\"184\" data-total-count=\"3340\">Ms. Adams-Webb estimated the total cost of the new center at $7 million. She said <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thorequities.com\/\">Thor Equities<\/a>, the owner of 88 Greenwich Street, was building the unfinished space at its own expense.<\/p>\n<p data-node-uid=\"1\" data-para-count=\"185\" data-total-count=\"3525\">The center still needs to raise about $4 million, she said, most of which would cover the exhibition, which is being designed by the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.skolnick.com\/\">Lee H.
