Biggest French Music Festival To Hit New York City In October<\/h1>\n

French music festival\u00a0Vieilles Charrues<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0will come to New York City on October 1 for its 25th anniversary. The event will take place at Central Park SummerStage, featuring performances by The Avener<\/a>, Matthieu Chedid<\/a>,\u00a0The Celtic Social Club<\/a> and\u00a0Krismenn & Alem<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The festival has its roots in Brittany, France, in 1992. In an attempt to help revive Brittany\u2019s economy, the festival began as\u00a0a small village fair that drew\u00a0around 500 people and\u00a0included music acts and local outdoor games.<\/p>\n

Now, Vieilles Charrues\u00a0stands as a major European music festival that\u2019s attracted 278,000 attendees this year, a lineup of over 50 artists, and more than\u00a06,000 volunteers who\u00a0help make it possible. Past performers include Bruce Springsteen or \u00a0James Brown, but also\u00a0Pharrell Williams, Snoop Dogg and Justice.<\/p>\n

The New York lineup will consist of emerging French and American bands. This will be the first time a major\u00a0European music festival will hit the stage outside of their mother country.<\/p>\n

New York is an international city, where cultures from around the world meet and combine. This fall, a great way to see that cultural diffusion firsthand is coming to Central Park for Vieilles Charrues<\/strong> New York<\/strong>, the American spin-off of one of France\u2019s most popular festivals. More than just French culture though, Vielles Charrues<\/a> celebrates the rich history of Brittany, a northwestern region with Celtic roots, a proud culture, and a linguistic tradition all its own. While you\u2019re in New York City getting to see the Breton side of things, you\u2019ll want to live like a local in a furnished apartment, and maybe get to know some other people from around the globe in your neighborhood!<\/p>\n

1. Vieilles Charrues: 25 Years<\/strong><\/p>\n

It takes time to build up a reputation as one of the premier music festivals in a country as large as France \u2013 25 years in fact. That\u2019s how long it\u2019s been since the first Vieilles Charrues, back in 1992 in Landelau, a town in central Brittany. The area is mainly known for its sleepy dairy farms and mystical old-growth forests, but in the center of Brittany, where there was a tradition of immigration to the US, you can find a curiosity. Pictured above is a replica of New York\u2019s famous Statue of Liberty<\/strong>, itself a gift from France, located in Gourin, near the regional hub of Carhaix and the Vieilles Charrues hometown of Landelau.<\/p>\n

The festival, like the majestic statue, was meant to be a beacon for different cultures. Its original goal was to combine a variety of genres \u2013 not just the Celtic folk music Brittany<\/strong> is famous for \u2013 and to bring the public together to appreciate a shared passion for music. On top of longtime favorites from the surrounding area, Vieilles Charrues has played host to French-language music stars Jean-Louis Aubert, Johnny Hallyday and Stromae; international sensations David Bowie, Johnny Clegg, Iggy Pop and Elton John; and genre-spanning American acts like ZZ Top, Snoop Dogg, Lionel Richie, Bob Dylan, Bruce Springsteen and Joan Baez. The event is now recognized as the largest music festival in France, with nearly a quarter million participants each year.<\/p>\n

Now, to honor the 25th iteration of the festival, the Vieilles Charrues organizers have decided to bring the party to New York! Combining the outdoor music tradition of Central Park\u2019s<\/a> SummerStage series with French savoir-faire and Breton cultural pride, this is an event you won\u2019t want to miss. In a collaboration with BZH, the Breton cultural association of New York, and other French and American partners, Vieilles Charrues is coming to New York in October.<\/p>\n

2. Les Vieilles Charrues in New York<\/strong><\/p>\n

In order to bring such a large-scale, much-loved festival to the hot New York market, Les Vieilles Charrues had to seek out the right partners. The most important of those is BZH NY, certified nonprofit seeking to promote and educate the public on Breton culture. By hosting events that bring attention to the unique history, language, and cultural traditions of the region, as well as its expat community in New York, BZH New York<\/strong> bridges the cultural divide across the Atlantic.<\/p>\n

One of the largest events the organization has ever hosted is the upcoming Vieilles Charrues festival, which will take place on October 1 in the heart of Central Park.
