NEW YORK – La Statue de la Libert\u00e9, ic\u00f4ne des \u00c9tats-Unis qui re\u00e7oit sur son \u00eele quelque 4,3 millions de visiteurs par an, aura bient\u00f4t son mus\u00e9e moderne et multim\u00e9dia, ont annonc\u00e9 jeudi des responsables de la Ville de New York.<\/strong><\/p>\n

La c\u00e9l\u00e8bre statue d\u2019Auguste Bartholdi et Gustave Eiffel –offerte par la France aux \u00c9tats-Unis pour marquer le centenaire de leur ind\u00e9pendance en 1876 et inaugur\u00e9e en 1886– n\u2019avait plus de mus\u00e9e vraiment digne d\u2019elle depuis 2001.<\/p>\n

Alors que le candidat r\u00e9publicain \u00e0 la pr\u00e9sidentielle Donald Trump d\u00e9nonce une immigration passoire, \u201cj\u2019esp\u00e8re que ce mus\u00e9e sera l\u2019une des passerelles qui nous aidera \u00e0 nous r\u00e9concilier avec ce que nous sommes\u201d, a d\u00e9clar\u00e9 le maire d\u00e9mocrate Bill de Blasio, en rappelant ses propres racines italiennes.<\/p>\n

The Statue of Liberty will soon celebrate its 130th anniversary, and with it plans for NYC\u2019s newest museum have been announced.<\/strong><\/p>\n

A new 20,000-square-foot museum is in the works near the statue that would accommodate far more people than the current exhibition space in the statue\u2019s pedestal, according to the Wall Street Journal.<\/p>\n

The museum will increase public access to exhibits on the history, construction and legacy of the statue, as well as provide additional shelter during inclement weather, according to an environmental review the National Park Service released last month cited by the Journal.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe like it. We just can\u2019t fit enough people in it,\u201d John Piltzecker, the park service\u2019s superintendent of the Statue of Liberty National Monument and Ellis Island, told the Journal.<\/p>\n

If plans are approved for the site on the northwest side of the island, it will take two years to build.<\/p>\n

The museum would be privately funded with designer and philanthropist Diane von Furstenberg and her billionaire husband Barry Diller backing the effort.<\/p>\n

Fashion designer Diane von Furstenberg<\/a> and husband Barry Diller are well known in the philanthropic circuit as supporters of cultural\u00a0public spaces. They were early funders of the High Line, and construction is soon to commence<\/a>\u00a0on Diller\u2019s $150 million+\u00a0futuristic offshore park known as Pier 55<\/a>. Their latest endeavor will be backing a new Statue of Liberty museum, as the Wall Street Journal<\/a> reports that\u00a0von Furstenberg has joined the board of the\u00a0Statue of Liberty-Ellis Island Foundation and agreed to assist with fundraising.<\/p>\n

The site proposed for the museum is on the northwest side of Liberty Island, across the plaza from the statue.\u00a0A sloping green roof with native vegetation is planned for the new building, along with a gallery area, immersive theater, bookstore, and administrative space. The building could accommodate 1,000 to 1,200 visitors per hour, more than double what\u2019s currently allowed in the pedestal.<\/p>\n

No cost estimates have been released, but the project will be privately funded. The Journal uncovered von Furstenberg\u2019s name in a quarterly report from the foundation, though her office wouldn\u2019t confirm her involvement. It\u2019s still in the quiet fundraising and conceptual\/planning phases, but if approved will likely take about two years to complete.<\/p>\n
