Dear members MDFDE, my Fellow Americans,<\/h2>\n

Happy Fourth of July, America!<\/strong> Happy Independence Day brought to us by our brave military forces, veterans and Allies in charge of keeping us free, keeping us safe since… 1776 and going!<\/p>\n

Yet, this year surely feels different with so many bullies around to defeat… So, before we get our country back in one piece, before our institutions start running smoothly just like it used to be under the watchful eye of the Statue of Liberty.<\/p>\n

As this year marks the 100th Anniversary of when the United States entered World War I (April 1917), let’s make this Fourth of July truly inspiring by reflecting on what our country stands for, by Honoring Our Fallen Heroes! Who is yours? Let me tell you a little bit about my own modern American hero. His name is Alan SEEGER.<\/p>\n

Alan SEEGER, the New Yorker (1888-1916), who fell in love with France and dreamed of following La Fayette’s footsteps while living his chilhood in Staten Island, right in front of the Statue of Liberty.<\/p>\n

Alan SEEGER, the early-20th century American poet, a brilliant young Harvard graduate (1910),\u00a0Classmate of T.S. Eliot, best known for the poem in which he foresaw his own destiny: I Have a Rendezvous with Death<\/i>, a favorite of President John F. Kennedy, published posthumously.<\/p>\n

Alan SEEGER, the soldier, who joined the French Foreign Legion in 1914 during World War I.\u00a0Who was asked, in 1915, to write an “Ode in Memory of the Americans Volunteers Fallen for France”<\/em> to be read before the statue of La Fayette and Washington in Paris… but was killed in action during the bloody Battle of the Somme, right on the 4th of July, 1916 at Belloy-en-Santerre, exactly 101 years ago today.<\/p>\n

Alan SEEGER, the late 28-year-old peace messanger (an uncle to the late Peter “<\/i>Pete”<\/i> Seeger, the famous American folk singer and social activist also from New York), to whom we will pay a very special tribute via our 2019 project #MDFDEFriendshipMerciTrain70<\/strong> in honor of the French Foreign Legion, the American Legion turning 100, and the 40 & 8 Society in (where else?) Monument to American Volunteers Fallen for France <\/strong>Long before the United States entered the European war in April 1917, thousands of Americans had already fought and hundreds had already died in service to France. They were members of the French Foreign Legion, the French Army and air forces, most notably the Lafayette Escadrille. As important were the thousands who traveled to France to serve in humanitarian, medical and ambulance corps. The Monument to American Volunteers Fallen for France in the Place des \u00c9tats-Unis, Paris was conceived by French General Charles Mangin, who had commanded American battalions in league with his own French forces. By 1922, he could still become emotional about Americans who fought for France before their own country joined the fight, and felt that they must never be forgotten. He determined that the monument would be an entirely French creation, and it was funded by 500,000 francs raised from 50,000 French citizens and school children. It was inscribed with names of dead American members of the Legion, the Escadrille and the American Field Service ambulance corps, and topped with a statue in the likeness of the poet soldier Alan Seeger (it would later include the name of one World War II American, see this newsletter January 2017). A la lecture de ces lignes nul ne peut rester insensible. Le Caporal Alan Seeger, charmant po\u00e8te am\u00e9ricain tomb\u00e9 \u00e0 Belloy, en est l\u2019auteur.<\/span><\/p>\n

Apr\u00e8s l\u2019attaque, lorsque, au petit jour, les brancardiers purent s\u2019approcher de lui, Alan Seeger, qui durant toute la nuit avait chant\u00e9 des refrains populaires fran\u00e7ais, s\u2019\u00e9tait tu. Il \u00e9tait mort.<\/span><\/p>\n

Les remous de la guerre d\u00e9truisirent le cimeti\u00e8re o\u00f9 il reposait avec ses camarades. \u00abMais si on r\u00e9ussit \u00e0 d\u00e9truire un homme, \u00e0 tuer un soldat ; il est impossible de faire dispara\u00eetre l\u2019\u0153uvre d\u2019un po\u00e8te, le souvenir glorieux d\u2019un h\u00e9ros.<\/em>\u00bb

Venu en France et ne retrouvant plus rien de son enfant, le p\u00e8re d\u2019Alan Seeger fit placer dans le clocher reconstruit de Belloy-en-Santerre, une cloche baptis\u00e9e au nom de la m\u00e8re du disparu. L’auteur de ces vers<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Alan Seeger, de nationalit\u00e9 am\u00e9ricaine, est n\u00e9 le 22 juin 1888 \u00e0 New York o\u00f9 il passe toute son enfance, entre un fr\u00e8re a\u00een\u00e9 et une s\u0153ur cadette. En 1900, la famille part s’installer au Mexique ; avec son fr\u00e8re il re\u00e7oit l’\u00e9ducation d’un pr\u00e9cepteur. Tous trois r\u00e9digent une revue qu’ils ont intitul\u00e9e “Le Proph\u00e8te<\/em>“. Alan en est le r\u00e9dacteur sportif mais il s’int\u00e9resse aussi \u00e0 d’autres sujets faisant ainsi preuve de qualit\u00e9s pr\u00e9coces pour la litt\u00e9rature.<\/span><\/p>\n

A l’\u00e2ge de quatorze ans, il retourne aux Etats-Unis, dans un coll\u00e8ge puis entre \u00e0 l’universit\u00e9 Harvard en 1906. Il y m\u00e8ne une vie studieuse et contemplative sans beaucoup se lier avec les autres \u00e9tudiants, du moins au d\u00e9but, mais sa participation \u00e0 la r\u00e9daction de “Harvard mensuel” auquel il donne de temps en temps des po\u00e8mes, l’am\u00e8ne \u00e0 se m\u00ealer \u00e0 la vie sociale de ses camarades qui le d\u00e9crivent ainsi : grand, \u00e9lanc\u00e9, le visage p\u00e2le mais plein d’\u00e9nergie, \u00e9trangement mobile, comme un masque ; ses cheveux sont coup\u00e9s courts, carr\u00e9ment au ras du front, le regard lointain… <\/span>http:\/\/amalep.free.fr\/le\/grands\/seeger\/seeger01.htm<\/a><\/p>\n

Alan quitte l’universit\u00e9 en 1910, passe deux ans \u00e0 New York puis va s’installer \u00e0 Paris, dans une chambre rue Sommerard, pr\u00e8s du mus\u00e9e de Cluny. Conquis par la France et sa capitale, il fr\u00e9quente surtout le Quartier Latin, les artistes et les \u00e9tudiants. Pour lui Paris est une cit\u00e9 des mille et une nuits. Entre 1912 et 1914, il se consacre surtout \u00e0 la po\u00e9sie et r\u00e9dige des chroniques dans le Mercure de France, Soir\u00e9es de Paris et autres revues. En 1914, il cherche \u00e0 faire publier un recueil de po\u00e8mes en anglais qui a pour titres “Juvenilia<\/em>” d’abord \u00e0 Londres puis \u00e0 Bruges en Belgique o\u00f9 il est interrompu dans ses d\u00e9marches par la d\u00e9claration de guerre entre la France et l’Allemagne. Il confie son manuscrit \u00e0 un imprimeur et rentre pr\u00e9cipitamment \u00e0 Paris pour s’engager dans la L\u00e9gion Etrang\u00e8re avec une cinquantaine de compatriotes.<\/span><\/p>\n

Alan expliquera son geste dans “Lettres \u00e9crites des tranch\u00e9es de l’Aisne<\/em>” qui para\u00eet dans “New Republic<\/em>” de New-York, le 22 mai 1915 et dans une lettre \u00e0 sa s\u0153ur dat\u00e9e du 26 f\u00e9vrier 1916, il confie : “Il n’y a dans la nature que deux principes, l’amour et la lutte\u2026 De toutes les formules que revendique ma jeunesse, celle dont je suis rest\u00e9 partisan comporte trois cat\u00e9gories : soif de science, soif de sentiment, soif de puissance<\/em>“, et poursuit dans son journal “Je me suis engag\u00e9 pour que la France et sp\u00e9cialement Paris que j’aime ne cessent pas d’\u00eatre la beaut\u00e9 qu’ils sont.<\/em>“<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Au c\u0153ur de la guerre, Alan est affect\u00e9 au R\u00e9giment de Marche du 2\u00e8me R\u00e9giment Etranger qui devient R\u00e9giment de Marche de la L\u00e9gion Etrang\u00e8re lors de sa fusion avec le R\u00e9giment de Marche du 1er R\u00e9giment Etranger en novembre 1915. Il est de tous les combats de son unit\u00e9 jusqu’\u00e0 ce qu’il tombe bless\u00e9 \u00e0 mort en juillet 1916, vivant toutes les souffrances de la vie au front et dans les tranch\u00e9es, ne cessant d’exalter les vertus guerri\u00e8res malgr\u00e9 la mort c\u00f4toy\u00e9e sans r\u00e9pit. Il porte toujours dans sa musette de quoi \u00e9crire son journal de route, des lettres \u00e0 tous ses proches et des po\u00e8mes. Nomm\u00e9 caporal, il \u00e9tonne les autres l\u00e9gionnaires par sa bravoure, son courage, un comportement distingu\u00e9 et g\u00e9n\u00e9reux \u00e0 l’\u00e9gard de tous.<\/span>http:\/\/amalep.free.fr\/le\/grands\/seeger\/seeger02.htm<\/a><\/p>\n

Sa derni\u00e8re lettre, destin\u00e9e \u00e0 l’un de ses amis, est dat\u00e9e du 28 juin 1916 : “Nous montons \u00e0 l’attaque demain ; ce sera probablement la plus grande affaire encore entreprise. Nous aurons l’honneur de marcher dans la premi\u00e8re vague. Pas de sac mais deux musettes, toile de tente roul\u00e9e sur l’\u00e9paule, profusion de cartouches, de grenades et ba\u00efonnettes au canon.<\/em><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Je vous \u00e9crirai si je m’en sors ; sinon, mon seul souci terrestre est pour mes po\u00e8mes. Ajoutez \u00e0 mon dernier volume, l’ode que je vous ai envoy\u00e9e et les trois sonnets et, vous aurez op\u00e9ra omnia quae existant.<\/span><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

Je suis content de marcher dans la premi\u00e8re vague. Quand on est dans de telles affaires, le mieux est d’y \u00eatre en plein. Et ceci est la supr\u00eame exp\u00e9rience.<\/span><\/em>“<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

La bataille de Belloy-en-Santerre. La suite est d\u00e9crite par ses compagnons d’armes. Son ami l\u00e9gionnaire, Rif Bear, d’origine \u00e9gyptienne s’exprime en fran\u00e7ais :<\/span><\/p>\n

“Dans la nuit du 30 juin au 1er juillet nous quitt\u00e2mes Bayonvillers pour nous rapprocher de la ligne de feu. Nous all\u00e2mes au Proyard, en r\u00e9serve d’arm\u00e9e. Le 1er juillet \u00e0 8 heures l’on nous rassembla pour le rapport et l’on nous annon\u00e7a que l’offensive g\u00e9n\u00e9rale commen\u00e7ait \u00e0 9 heures sans nous, puisque nous \u00e9tions en r\u00e9serve, et que l’on nous aviserait du jour et de l’heure o\u00f9 nous entrerions en action. Le rapport termin\u00e9, nous f\u00eemes la corv\u00e9e d’obus ; nous d\u00e9chargions les obus de “205” des camions automobiles qui les amenaient jusqu’\u00e0 nous.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

Il r\u00e9gnait partout un remue m\u00e9nage effroyable. Les coloniaux avaient enlev\u00e9 les premi\u00e8res lignes allemandes, des milliers de prisonniers arrivaient de partout, et les ambulances d\u00e9filaient continuellement sur les routes. Avides de nouvelles, nous d\u00e9laissions notre travail pour courir aux renseignements qui \u00e9taient de tr\u00e8s bon augure.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n

Vers 4 heures, nous quitt\u00e2mes Proyard \u00e0 destination de Fontaine-les-Cappy, en premi\u00e8re ligne. Alan \u00e9tait radieux et attendait impatiemment le moment de prendre part \u00e0 l’action. Partout c’\u00e9tait le d\u00e9lire et la joie d’avoir repouss\u00e9 l’ennemi sans perte de notre part. L’on croyait ne plus \u00e9prouver de r\u00e9sistance et que notre choc serait fatal aux Allemands. http:\/\/amalep.free.fr\/le\/grands\/seeger\/seeger03.htm<\/a>

Apr\u00e8s avoir pass\u00e9 la nuit \u00e0 Fontaine-les-Cappy, nous nous dirige\u00e2mes le matin vers les anciennes premi\u00e8res lignes allemandes. Je passais presque toute la journ\u00e9e avec Alan ; il \u00e9tait heureux ; une \u00e9motion d\u00e9licieuse l’\u00e9treignait, me disait-il, “mon r\u00eave approche ; c’est peut-\u00eatre ce soir ou demain que nous attaquerons. Je suis tr\u00e8s content mais cela m’ennuie un peu \u00e0 cause de la permission du 4 juillet. Je n’ai aucun espoir de revoir Paris avant le 6 ou le 7, mais si cette permission ne m’est pas accord\u00e9e,<\/strong> “Maktoub, Maktoub”, ajouta-t-il en souriant.<\/span><\/em><\/div>\n

Le champ, de bataille \u00e9tait relativement calme ; peu d’obus tir\u00e9s par l’ennemi en d\u00e9route, et nos troupes avan\u00e7aient de tous les c\u00f4t\u00e9s ; les coloniaux avaient pris Assevillers et le lendemain nous devions les remplacer en premi\u00e8re ligne. Le 3 juillet, vers midi, nous nous dirige\u00e2mes vers Asservillers et nous devions faire la rel\u00e8ve avec la tomb\u00e9e de la nuit. Nous all\u00e2mes, Seeger et moi, visiter Asservillers. Il avait son calme habituel. Nous ramass\u00e2mes des souvenirs, des cartes postales, lettres, des carnets de route, tout en bavardant\u2026 quand, tout \u00e0 coup, l’on appela : la compagnie se rassemblait pour aller en premi\u00e8re ligne.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n

Le soleil \u00e9tait couch\u00e9, une p\u00e9nombre croissante enveloppait la terre ; \u00e0 la faveur des t\u00e9n\u00e8bres naissantes la rel\u00e8ve se fit sans incident. On ignorait les positions des Allemands en les supposant \u00e0 quelques cent m\u00e8tres de nous tandis que r\u00e9ellement ils avaient recul\u00e9 jusqu’\u00e0 Belloy-en-Santerre et n’avaient laiss\u00e9 devant nous que quelques sentinelles et petits postes avanc\u00e9s. Toute la nuit fut employ\u00e9e \u00e0 se fortifier, creuser des tranch\u00e9es et faire des patrouilles pour se rendre compte de l’emplacement de l’ennemi. J’\u00e9tais en petit poste et Alan travaillait.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n

A l’aube je rencontrais Alan et lui demandais ses impressions. Il \u00e9tait enchant\u00e9. ” Sans ces sales pelles et pioches, ce serait superbe, me dit-il, mais ces outils tuent le charme de la guerre. Heureusement, ajouta-t-il, que c’est fini, – maintenant c’est la guerre en rase campagne et nous n’aurons plus de tranch\u00e9es “, – et il me montra ses mains si fines, salies et meurtries par le dur labeur de terrassier. La pluie commen\u00e7a \u00e0 tomber et nous cour\u00fbmes chacun de notre c\u00f4t\u00e9 nous mettre \u00e0 l’abri sous nos toiles de tente.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n

En prenant ma place je rencontre Alan, qui va rejoindre la sienne ; nous nous serrons la main et nous souhaitons de tout c\u0153ur bonne chance. Notre compagnie est la r\u00e9serve du bataillon. Deux bataillons doivent attaquer Belloy-en -Santerre. Les compagnies formant la premi\u00e8re vague sont d\u00e9ploy\u00e9es dans la plaine ; les ba\u00efonnettes brillent au-dessus des bl\u00e9s d\u00e9j\u00e0 tr\u00e8s hauts.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n

La premi\u00e8re section, celle d’Alan, forme la droite et l’avant-garde de la compagnie et la mienne forme l’aile gauche. Apr\u00e8s le premier bond, nous nous couchons \u00e0 terre et je vois la premi\u00e8re section prendre de l’avance sur nous ; elle se dirige vers l’extr\u00eame droite du village de Belloy. J’aper\u00e7ois Alan, je l’appelle et lui, fais un signe amical de la main. Il me r\u00e9pond d’un sourire.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n

Comme il \u00e9tait p\u00e2le ! Sa haute silhouette se d\u00e9tachait sur le fond vert des champs de bl\u00e9 ; il \u00e9tait le plus grand de sa section. La t\u00eate haute, le regard fier, je le voyais courir ba\u00efonnette au canon ; bient\u00f4t il disparut. C’\u00e9tait la derni\u00e8re fois que je voyais mon ami.<\/span><\/em>“<\/span><\/p>\n

L’assaut est terrible, les pertes sont importantes : les compagnies de la premi\u00e8re vague se trouvent prises en enfilade par un feu tr\u00e8s dense de l’ennemi, le tir de ses mitrailleuses frappe impitoyablement. Mortellement bless\u00e9, le caporal Alan Seeger est l’un des premiers \u00e0 tomber mais encore vivant, il regarde passer ses camarades qu’il ne peut suivre ; aucun secours n’est possible. Les officiers et sous officiers sont tous mis hors de combat les uns apr\u00e8s les autres. Clou\u00e9s au sol, sans lever la t\u00eate, les bless\u00e9s commencent \u00e0 s’interpeller pour se compter et \u00e9changer des nouvelles ; lorsque, tout d’un coup, un moment de flottement s’\u00e9tablit sur le champ de bataille, un silence lourd et pesant envahit tout quelques instants.<\/span><\/p>\n

“A ce moment-l\u00e0, <\/em>\u00e9crira plus tard le Capitaine de Tscharner, qui vient d’\u00eatre gri\u00e8vement bless\u00e9, il se passa quelque chose de sublime parmi les bless\u00e9s et les mourants : on entendit soudain un cri vibrant : Ils y sont \u2026 Belloy est pris !… Vive la L\u00e9gion ! Vive la France ! C’\u00e9taient les l\u00e9gionnaires qui prenaient leur part de victoire.<\/em>“<\/span><\/p>\n

La d\u00e9fense de Belloy est aussit\u00f4t organis\u00e9e pour repousser les nombreuses contre attaques qui vont rendre la situation tr\u00e8s critique \u00e0 plusieurs reprises. La bataille va durer toute la nuit ; le dernier assaut de plusieurs compagnies allemandes est repouss\u00e9 \u00e0 4 h 45. Avec le lever du jour, les secours se mettent en place pour venir en aide aux bless\u00e9s et ramasser les morts parmi lesquels l’on retrouve le corps du Caporal Alan Seeger ; ils sont regroup\u00e9s et inhum\u00e9s sur place. Plus tard, des survivants \u00e9voquant la fin du po\u00e8te, ont affirm\u00e9 l’avoir entendu chanter des chansons folkloriques fran\u00e7aises durant la nuit.<\/strong> Victorieux, le R.M.L.E. qui comptait pr\u00e8s de 2.000 hommes avant la bataille, a perdu 25 officiers ainsi que 844 sous-officiers et l\u00e9gionnaires, faisant 750 prisonniers dont 15 officiers. <\/span><\/p>\n

D\u00e8s la fin de la Grande Guerre, le p\u00e8re d’Alan Seeger rechercha la s\u00e9pulture de son fils. Il ne retrouva rien. Poursuivant ses ravages, la guerre avait tout effac\u00e9. Aussi, lors de la reconstruction du clocher de l’\u00e9glise de Belloy, il offrit une cloche frapp\u00e9e du nom de la m\u00e8re du po\u00e8te disparu. Peut-\u00eatre pour qu’elle sonne en \u00e9cho aux appels d’une m\u00e8re recherchant son enfant ?<\/span><\/p>\n

En 1923, la France a fait \u00e9riger un monument \u00e0 la m\u00e9moire des “Volontaires Am\u00e9ricains morts pour la France<\/em>” durant la grande Guerre. Il est situ\u00e9 \u00e0 Paris, place des Etats-Unis, en bordure de l’avenue d’I\u00e9na, non loin de “l’Arche immense o\u00f9 repose l’Inconnu<\/em>“. La statue de bronze qui le surplombe est l’\u0153uvre du sculpteur Jean Boucher qui a travaill\u00e9 d’apr\u00e8s une photographie d’Alan Seeger qui figure ainsi en bonne place au c\u0153ur de Paris qu’il aimait tant. <\/span><\/p>\n

A hundred years ago, at the height of World War I, the Battle of the Somme raged in northern France. More than 600,000 British and French troops became casualties trying to break the German lines, yet an American became arguably as celebrated as any of them, even though his nation had not yet entered the war. A few weeks before he was killed, Alan Seeger, A.B. 1910\u2014a tall, mop-haired French Foreign Legionnaire\u2014composed an eerie, premonitory three-stanza poem. Either despite or because of its brevity, \u201cI Have a Rendezvous with Death<\/a>\u201d\u00a0was an instant classic\u2014the most famous American poem of a verse-filled war. It became not only a staple of high-school English-class recitations but also the favorite poem of President John F. Kennedy \u201940.<\/p>\n

Seeger\u2019s death wish was not lifelong. His early days were spent happily on Staten Island. When he was 10, the family began two years in Mexico, where his father had business interests; that country, with its exotic flora, figured in many of his later poems.<\/p>\n

At Harvard, he took a while to find his footing. Recalling those days a decade later, in a letter from the front to an old friend, he wrote: \u201cMy life during those years was intellectual to the exclusion of almost everything else. I shut myself off completely from the life of the University. I felt no need of comradeship.\u201d He was more social as an upperclassman, earnestly composing poetry (heavy on truth and beauty) and finding a congenial group of fellow aesthetes (including classmates Walter Lippmann and John Reed) as an editor of the literary magazine The Harvard Monthly.<\/em><\/p>\n

These years may have launched him, at least literarily, on his rendezvous with death. In Memoirs of the Harvard Dead in the War Against Germany<\/em> (1920), the entry for Seeger notes: \u201cIn The Advance of English Poetry in the Twentieth Century,<\/em> by Professor Phelps of Yale, there is quoted a letter from Professor Robinson of Harvard telling of the strong impression made upon Seeger by the Irish \u2018Song of Fothad Canainne,\u2019\u2026a song which sings: \u2018It is a blindness for one who makes a tryst to set aside the tryst with death.\u2019\u200a\u201d<\/p>\n

After graduation, Seeger aimed to become a full-time man of letters\u2014first in New York City, then in Paris. The market for aspiring poets was no better then than now, but in the City of Lights, Seeger \u201cwas happier than he had ever been before,\u201d recalled another Monthly<\/em> colleague, poet John Hall Wheelock, A.B. 1908. But \u201che was still uncertain of himself and his aims, still waiting for that destiny which he felt every day more clearly and steadfastly was somehow in preparation for him.\u201d<\/p>\n

The guns of August 1914 announced his path: 23 days after the outbreak of war, Seeger enlisted in the Foreign Legion. Like many who rushed to the colors, he envisioned a brief, glorious conflict he would survive. On October 17, from training camp at Aube, he wrote his mother: \u201cDo not worry, for the chances are small of not returning and I think you can count on seeing me\u2026next summer.\u201d<\/p>\n

Soldiering proved no less Seeger\u2019s metier than sonnetry. In the next two years he was shuttled from trench to trench, in harm\u2019s way from German artillery and bullets, one of which \u201cjust grazed my arm, tore the sleeve of my capote and raised a lump on the biceps which is still sore, but the skin was not broken and the wound was not serious enough to make me leave the ranks.\u201d In October 1915 he was mistakenly reported killed in the Battle of Champagne.<\/p>\n

All along, he was writing\u2014poems, sonnets, a diary, and picturesque letters as well dispatches to U.S. newspapers. In spring 1916, he composed the eloquent \u201cOde in Memory of the American Volunteers Fallen for France<\/a>\u201d; he was bitterly disappointed when he didn\u2019t receive leave to read it in Paris on Decoration Day.<\/p>\n

On July 4, three days after the start of the Somme offensive, Seeger\u2019s battalion was ordered to capture the village of Belloy-en-Santerre. The first wave went forward, Seeger\u2019s reserve company following. A friend and fellow legionnaire, an Egyptian named Rif Baer, chronicled his final moments. \u201cHis tall silhouette stood out on the green of the cornfield,\u201d Baer wrote. \u201c\u2026His head erect, and pride in his eye, I saw him running forward, with bayonet fixed. Soon he disappeared and that was the last time I saw my friend.\u201d Twelve days before, Seeger had turned 28.<\/p>\n

As is often true for artists, death was (to be blunt) a good career move for Seeger, especially after the United States entered the war. Scribner\u2019s published a collection of his poems, and his diary. The New York Times<\/em> Sunday Magazine<\/em> ran an admiring profile. Sportswriting icon Grantland Rice lionized him in verse in Songs of the Stalwart<\/em>.<\/p>\n

Later critics, including a fellow soldier, Paul Fussell, Ph.D. \u201952, have been more jaundiced. In his groundbreaking The Great War and Modern Memory, <\/em>Fussell dismisses \u201cRendezvous,\u201d all but labeling it second-rate, especially beside contemporary British war poetry: \u201cIt is unresonant and inadequate for irony compared with works like\u2026[Wilfred] Owen\u2019s \u2018Exposure,\u2019 which begins with a travesty-echo of the first line of Keats\u2019s \u2018Ode to a Nightingale.\u2019\u200a\u201d Unfortunately, Fussell does not mention Seeger\u2019s \u201cOde in Memory,\u201d a work of honest sentiment, historical sweep, and considerable elegance.<\/p>\n

Seeger had asked that weeping be tempered at his death. A year before, he wrote: \u201cThe tears for those who take part in [battle and] \u2026do not return should be sweetened by the sense that their death was the death which beyond all others they would have chosen for themselves, that they went to it smiling and without regret.\u201d<\/p>\n
