I am thrilled to announce to you today that Dr. Clive LAMMING, one of the world’s foremost railway historians, doctor in history from the Paris IV-Sorbonne University, professeur agr\u00e9g\u00e9<\/em> and popular author of dozens of rail books with special expertise on French trains and American trains, is joining our Executive French-American Committee #MDFDEFriendshipMerciTrain70<\/strong> celebrating the 70th Anniversary of the Merci Train and the story of the Friendship Train in 2019-2020.<\/p>\n

As a ‘walking encyclopedia<\/em>‘ of railroad history, Dr. Lamming was the technical and historical adviser for Director Martin Scorsese’s movie Hugo Cabret<\/em>, filmed at the Shepperton Studios in London, U.K. (2011). And most recently, he worked in the same capacity for Murder<\/em> on the<\/em> Orient Express, <\/em>a 2017 American mystery drama film by British actor and director Kenneth Branagh, produced by 20th Century Fox.<\/p>\n

Biographie du Dr. Clive LAMMING :<\/strong><\/p>\n

Clive Lamming, n\u00e9 au Royaume-Uni en 1938, est un historien du chemin de fer, notamment connu pour ses nombreuses publications d’ouvrages concernant le domaine ferroviaire.<\/p>\n

Apr\u00e8s des \u00e9tudes d’enseignant, il devient professeur agr\u00e9g\u00e9 hors-classe, nomm\u00e9 formateur des enseignants du technique \u00e0 l’\u00c9ducation Nationale, puis des instructeurs du centre de formation des apprentis (CFA) de la SNCF.<\/p>\n

En 1993 \u00e0 l’Universit\u00e9 Paris IV-Sorbonne, Clive Lamming soutient sa th\u00e8se de doctorat d’histoire intitul\u00e9e : \u00ab \u00c9volution des politiques de traction et des techniques de traction \u00e0 la SNCF \u00bb.<\/p>\n

Clive Lamming est un historien des chemins de fer fran\u00e7ais connu dans le monde des chemins de fer pour une cinquantaine d’ouvrages, dont certains sont de r\u00e9f\u00e9rence, publi\u00e9s chez de grands \u00e9diteurs comme \u00ab Le Larousse des trains \u00bb ou \u00ab Les Grands Trains \u00bb (Larousse), \u00ab M\u00e9tro insolite \u00bb, \u00ab Cinquante ans de traction \u00e0 la SNCF \u00bb (CNRS), \u00ab Trains de l\u00e9gende \u00bb (Atlas), etc. Il est collectionneur de tr\u00e8s nombreux documents historiques et livres ferroviaires (remontant jusqu’\u00e0 1845), de photographies ferroviaires anciennes (remontant jusqu’aux ann\u00e9es 1870) et de catalogues de trains-jouets anciens et miniatures (remontant jusqu’au XIXe si\u00e8cle).<\/p>\n

Il collabore \u00e0 la \u00ab Revue G\u00e9n\u00e9rale des Chemins de fer \u00bb qui est une revue de r\u00e9f\u00e9rence pour les ing\u00e9nieurs de la SNCF.<\/p>\n

Clive Lamming a \u00e9t\u00e9 consultant en studio pour France 2 lors du record de vitesse du TGV \u00e0 574,8 km\/h le 3 avril 2007.<\/p>\n

Historien du chemin de fer, passionn\u00e9 des locomotives, obs\u00e9d\u00e9 du rail, Clive Lamming, 73 ans, vient de signer un livre passionnant: \u00abParis au temps des gares\u00bb (Parigramme, 160 pages, 25 \u20ac). Richement illustr\u00e9, l\u2019album reconstitue l\u2019architecture secr\u00e8te d\u2019un Paris b\u00e2ti autour de ses r\u00e9seaux ferr\u00e9s, symboles du progr\u00e8s et de l\u2019abondance. De la Gare du Nord, la plus belle, \u00e0 la gare de Denfert, la plus ancienne, rien n\u2019\u00e9chappe au regarde l\u2019auteur, d\u2019une \u00e9rudition incroyable. Preserved in time: WWII bunker hidden under Paris train station<\/strong><\/p>\n

PARIS (AFP)\u00a0-It lies hidden deep beneath Paris’s bustling Gare de l’Est railway station, its sprawling subterranean rooms and sparse furniture pristinely preserved if a little dusty.<\/p>\n

Originally built a few years before World War II for luggage storage, the underground bunker was repurposed after war broke out.<\/p>\n

French railway historian Clive Lamming said its 1939 overhaul was to provide “a place to retreat in case of an air attack” so staff could keep the trains running east towards Germany.<\/p>\n

Leading this AFP reporter through a concrete air lock and heavy door to the shelter, he said: “The concern was gas.”<\/p>\n

“We remembered World War I — a perfectly airtight place was needed,” he added.<\/p>\n

With its three-metre (10-foot) thick concrete ceiling, it was designed for about 70 people to be able to take refuge in the small rooms of the 120-square-metre (1,300-square-foot) shelter.<\/p>\n

But, in the end, the bunker never really saw any action — Paris was largely spared from air attacks during WWII, and there was little danger of poison gas.<\/p>\n

After France’s defeat in 1940 and Nazi occupation, the bunker was requisitioned by the Germans and traces of their presence remain, including a sign that reads “Notausgang” (emergency exit).<\/p>\n

“In my opinion, it hasn’t been finished,” said Lamming, as a high-speed TGV train loudly rumbled overhead.<\/p>\n
