As data gradually came in, relayed by several spacecraft orbiting the Red Planet, the Perseverance team were relieved to see the rover\u2019s health reports, which showed everything appeared to be working as expected.<\/p>\n<p>Adding to the excitement was a high-resolution image taken during the rover\u2019s landing. Perseverance has already sent back an impressive set of images to show that she&#8217;s safe and ready to go through a &#8220;checkout&#8221; phase before starting her journey across the surface.<\/p>\n<p class=\"zn-body__paragraph\" data-paragraph-id=\"paragraph_146D8411-E863-59FE-8471-BDA7F562B012\">Now, the mission team has heard directly from the helicopter for the first time &#8212; and it&#8217;s good news.<\/p>\n<p class=\"zn-body__paragraph\" data-paragraph-id=\"paragraph_52F38886-8B7B-81FD-C988-BD982F1F2720\">Ingenuity is currently tucked up beneath the rover and attached to Perseverance&#8217;s belly. The helicopter will remain snug with the rover for 30 to 60 days.<\/p>\n<p class=\"zn-body__paragraph\" data-paragraph-id=\"paragraph_3AC167AF-62AE-7C9E-3EB1-BDB1150ABCAF\">&#8220;Ingenuity, the Mars Helicopter I carry, is working as expected. I&#8217;m currently charging it, but once I set it down, it&#8217;ll rely solely on its solar panels. If it survives the brutally cold Martian nights, the team will attempt flight,&#8221; read a<a href=\"http:\/\/twitter.com\/NASAPersevere\/status\/1362948845944987648?s=20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> tweet<\/a> from the Perseverance Twitter account.<\/p>\n<p class=\"zn-body__paragraph\" data-paragraph-id=\"paragraph_F20D3911-B7E2-099E-5D29-BD95043E159C\">&#8220;There are two big-ticket items we are looking for in the data: the state of charge of Ingenuity&#8217;s batteries as well as confirmation the base station is operating as designed, commanding heaters to turn off and on to keep the helicopter&#8217;s electronics within an expected range,&#8221; said Tim Canham, Ingenuity Mars Helicopter operations lead at NASA&#8217;s Jet Propulsion Laboratory, in a statement.<\/p>\n<p class=\"zn-body__paragraph\" data-paragraph-id=\"paragraph_D4B66DB1-8C5D-18E0-B740-BD9B91DB8658\">&#8220;Both appear to be working great. With this positive report, we will move forward with (Saturday&#8217;s) charge of the helicopter&#8217;s batteries.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"zn-body__paragraph\" data-paragraph-id=\"paragraph_87E56527-3187-4F31-6642-BD9BC3B7933B\">Ingenuity needs to power up and store energy so it can keep itself warm and maintain other vital functions during the cold Martian nights once the rover deposits the helicopter on the red planet&#8217;s surface. As Elton John famously sings in &#8220;Rocket Man,&#8221; Mars is, indeed, as cold as hell.<\/p>\n<p class=\"zn-body__paragraph\" data-paragraph-id=\"paragraph_51B6BE3D-8CF1-BD24-F36C-BD9CCBA783C1\">Maintaining function and good battery health will be critical if the helicopter is to survive the frigid Martian climate before attempting any test flights later on. A total of five test flights are planned over a 31-day period once the rover finds the right &#8220;helipad,&#8221; or nice flat spot, to deposit Ingenuity.<\/p>\n<p class=\"zn-body__paragraph\" data-paragraph-id=\"paragraph_1B9CE301-A48B-11EB-CB0E-BD9DE7974D89\">As long as Ingenuity is attached to Perseverance, the helicopter can give its batteries a boost. The helicopter has six lithium-ion batteries. Ce fil sp\u00e9cial conduit l&#8217;\u00e9lectricit\u00e9 mais pas la chaleur&#8221;<\/em>. Par ailleurs des soudures tr\u00e8s sp\u00e9cifiques ont \u00e9t\u00e9 r\u00e9alis\u00e9es pour adapter le microphone \u00e0 son environnement spatial.<\/p>\n<p>Gr\u00e2ce \u00e0 une calibration effectu\u00e9e sur Terre, dans une chambre reproduisant les conditions \u00ab martiennes \u00bb, les enregistrements effectu\u00e9s par le micro pourront aider les chercheurs de l\u2019Isae-Supaero \u00e0 caract\u00e9riser les diff\u00e9rents types de mat\u00e9riaux analys\u00e9s par l\u2019instrument SuperCam, en s\u2019appuyant sur une collection de sons de r\u00e9f\u00e9rence.<\/p>\n<p>Il faut savoir que le bruit sur Mars est fortement att\u00e9nu\u00e9 et ne se propage pas. Cela revient \u00e0 une conversation \u00e0 travers un mur de dix cm d\u2019\u00e9paisseur.<\/p>\n<h2>Une double mission sur une d\u00e9cennie<\/h2>\n<p>La mission primaire de Perseverance durera environ 22 mois terrestres apr\u00e8s l\u2019atterrissage soit jusqu\u2019au 6 janvier 2023.
