Discours de Ferdinand de Lesseps, Président de l’Union franco-américaine, célébrant l’achèvement de la Statue de la Liberté lors du banquet donné à Paris en l’honneur de Levi Morton, le ministre des États-Unis en France, le 11 Juin 1884.
Ferdinand de Lesseps (1805-1894), surnommé « le Grand Français », diplomate et entrepreneur dont l’oncle, Barthélémy de Lesseps, était l’interprète de russe et seul survivant de la tragique Expédition La Pérouse au Pacifique (1785-1788).
Chers membres du MDFDE, chers amis internautes,
Il y a exactement 131 ans aujourd’hui arrivait dans la baie de New York, après sa traversée de l’Atlantique, le navire « L’Isère » transportant le plus précieux des cargos, la plus grande des dames jamais sculptée, livrée en pièces détachées – 210 caisses, 80 tonnes de cuivre et 20 tonnes d’acier – notre légendaire Statue de la Liberté, symbole de l’amitié franco-américaine, symbole universel de liberté et de démocratie à jamais chéri et pour cause en ce siècle tourmenté globalement par l’égoïsme, le sexisme, le racisme des hommes qui ne pensent jamais aux conséquences avant de commettre les pires méfaits.
Comme vous le savez, nous sommes en pleins préparatifs pour l’organisation de notre ambitieux projet MDFDE/Paris-NYC16 #MDFDEJeSuisLadyLiberty130 les 26-27-28 octobre 2016 à New York commémorant 238 ans d’Alliance et d’Amitié entre la France et les États-Unis, à l’occasion du 130ème Anniversaire de la Statue de la Liberté et le 100ème Anniversaire du National Park Service (NPS) en hommage à nos 130 innocentes victimes des attentats du 13 novembre 2015 à Paris dont une jeune étudiante californienne, auxquels s’ajoutent désormais nos victimes LGBTQA d’Orlando, Florida.
À cet effet, je voudrais d’ores et déjà remercier, pour leur soutien précieux et patronage, les personnalités suivantes : Mr. Gérard ARAUD, Ambassadeur de France à Washington D.C.; Mr. François DELATTRE, Ambassadeur de France à la Mission permanente française aux Nations Unies ; Mr. Bertrand LORTHOLARY, Consul général de France à New York ; Mr. Frédéric LEFEBVRE, Député des Français établis hors de France – 1ère Circonscription Amérique du Nord. Et « last but not least » trois de nos cadres particulièrement actifs à mes côtés dans la réalisation de ledit projet, j’ai nommé Me Sophie RAVEN, notre Directrice Exécutive MDFDE/New York, Chair de notre Conférence internationale NYC sur l’Immigration, les Droits de l’Homme/LGBT et l’entrepreneuriat social ; Mme Sylvie JOSEPH-JULIEN, Directrice Exécutive artistique MDFDE/Seattle et Mr. Richard HANOUT, Directeur Exécutif commercial MDFDE/Seattle/Coiffure & Cosmétiques qui à eux deux, cette année, n’ont pas moins de quatre fantastiques projets pédagogiques et artistiques « Lady Liberty Atelier d’Ichère USA-France/MDFDE » au Pacific Northwest et dont on parle déjà beaucoup de Redmond à Bellevue et jusqu’à Seattle tant la France y est populaire…
J’en profite également pour inviter à nouveau toute personne, établissement scolaire, association culturelle, donateurs et sponsors souhaitant participer à notre projet de bien vouloir nous contacter ASAP car le temps presse.
En attendant de se retrouver tous, du moins je l’espère, à New York en octobre prochain… En ce jour historique…

New York Today: Lady Liberty Lands

Good morning on this fantastic Friday.
Today we celebrate one of our city’s most famous immigrants: the Statue of Liberty.
She arrived from France in 212 crates on this day in 1885.
But it took a while to get her on her feet. Because of a lack of funding, she lay in pieces for about a year.
(Contrary to popular belief, she wasn’t a gift from the French government but rather a crowdsourced project largely funded by French and American citizens.)
She’s been our city’s steady guardian for more than 130 years, but her symbolism has shifted with the times.
In her early years, there was an attempt to make her a lighthouse. She looked “more like a glow worm than a beacon,” The New York World wrote.
She has represented the abolitionist movement — notice the chains at her feet — and, of course, shelter for immigrants.
But the association with immigrants did not take firm hold until the 1930s, said Edward Berenson, a professor of history at New York University.
“At first, the symbolism surrounding her was xenophobic, not pro-immigration,” he said.
When plans to build an immigrant-processing center on what’s now known as Liberty Island were proposed, there was a public uproar.
“Her image was used in newspaper cartoons to express some pretty awful associations attached to European immigrants,” he said.
The center went to Ellis Island.
She’s quite the chameleon.
So it shouldn’t come as a surprise that today some are calling attention to her original incarnation, as a Muslim. The French sculptor Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi initially conceived the statue as a Muslim peasant to stand at the approach to the Suez Canal.

The French Navy Ship Isere and the Statue of Liberty
Today’s “Google Doodle,” the changing graphic that appears at the top of the Google search page, is a whimsical memorial to the arrival of the Statue of Liberty in New York. “Google is celebrating America’s most famous gift from France today with a logo marking the Statue of Liberty’s arrival in the New York Harbor 130 years ago on June 17, 1885.”
Many sources put the arrival of the Statue of Liberty in New York as two days later on the June 19th. Likewise, the Google Doodle takes artistic license in showing the Statue of Liberty teetering on the deck of a tiny generic steam ship. So when and how did the Statue of Liberty arrive in New York?
The copper statue, “Liberty Enlightening the World,” designed by Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi, was loaded into the French navy transport ship Isere as 350 individual pieces, packaged in more than 200 crates. The Isere is often referred to as a frigate, but arrived in New York serving as a cargo vessel, without guns aboard. The ship was a propeller driven steam ship with three masts, around 215 feet long with 30 feet of beam. Here is how the New York Times reported her arrival in an article dated June 18, 1885.
“A pilot boat sailing around in search of one of the big transatlantic steamers, about 10 miles off Sandy Hook Lightship, on Tuesday night, ran close under the bows of an odd-looking, bark rigger propeller, with her hull painted white, and a high funnel between the main and the mizzen masts. The man on lookout shouted down the companionway to the pilots that he thought it was a tramp. The vessel was hailed and a voice answered, “What ship?”
“Insere, from Rouen” came back though the darkness, in broken English.
“It’s all right,” said Pilot Henderson, getting into a small boat and heading for the vessel; “she’s got that big Liberty aboard.”
The ship, which appears to have arrived on June 16th, could not cross the harbor bar because a gale blew up, so she anchored offshore. The voyage had been rough at times. Again, from the NY Times:
Capt. De Saune … said that the Isere had been tossed about in rough weather between Rouen and Fayal. To make bad matters worse, the coal gave out and she had to make sail. After leaving Fayal the weather was lovely and the steamer made rapid time.
The colossal statue weighs 220 tons, and is packed away below decks in 212 boxes, some of them 20 feet long. It took 17 days to stow them away so as to prevent shifting when the vessel rolled and tossed in the tremendous billows. The work was well done, for Lieut. Amet said that not a box moved from its place, though in the early part of the voyage there was ample provocation.
With the news of Isere’s arrival, French Admiral LaCombe set out on the French warship La Flore from Newport , RI, bound for New York to welcome Insere. On the 17th, Isere, crossed the bar into New York harbor and anchored in Gravesend Bay to await welcoming the ceremonies.
On the 19th, Isere was escorted to Bedloes Island by the war ships Powhatan, Omaha, Alliance and La Flore as well as the steamer Dispatch, the ferryboat Atlantic and several private steamers. On land, the Seventy-first, Twelfth and Sixty-ninth Regiments, with the Rochambeau and Lafayette Guards, marched up Broadway from the Battery to City Hall.
So when did the Isere arrive with the crated Statue of Liberty? On the 17th or the 19th? Take your pick. She crossed the bar on the 17th but actually arrived at Bedloes Island, now called Liberty Island where the statue resides, with full pomp and ceremony on the 19th.
The steamer Isere apparently survived until 1943 when she was sunk during World War II.
