NEW YORK – La Statue de la Liberté, icône des États-Unis qui reçoit sur son île quelque 4,3 millions de visiteurs par an, aura bientôt son musée moderne et multimédia, ont annoncé jeudi des responsables de la Ville de New York.
La célèbre statue d’Auguste Bartholdi et Gustave Eiffel –offerte par la France aux États-Unis pour marquer le centenaire de leur indépendance en 1876 et inaugurée en 1886– n’avait plus de musée vraiment digne d’elle depuis 2001.
Les consignes de sécurité renforcées après les attentats du 11-Septembre avaient réduit la capacité d’accueil de l’exposition située à l’intérieur du monument, de sorte que 20 {4d24daa5a359aa22e51c71c531e935ff229d31c7c5eb0da4885e362fa152ead6} seulement des visiteurs de Liberty Island pouvaient y accéder, a expliqué le National Park Service qui gère le site.
La fondation qui co-gère Liberty Island et Ellis Island toute proche –à l’origine déjà de la rénovation du musée de l’immigration d’Ellis– a lancé jeudi la construction de ce bâtiment tout en baies vitrées, d’un coût estimé à 70 millions de dollars.
À son ouverture en 2019, le musée devrait offrir une vue magnifique sur Manhattan en même temps qu’une “expérience multisensorielle” et “une réflexion sur la notion même de liberté”, selon ses concepteurs.
Contrairement au musée actuel situé dans le piédestal de la statue, le bâtiment sera érigé à la pointe opposée de la petite île. Son toit végétalisé sera aménagé en vaste promenade, auquel un escalier monumental permettra d’accéder.
Alors que le candidat républicain à la présidentielle Donald Trump dénonce une immigration passoire, “j’espère que ce musée sera l’une des passerelles qui nous aidera à nous réconcilier avec ce que nous sommes”, a déclaré le maire démocrate Bill de Blasio, en rappelant ses propres racines italiennes.
La ville de New York, qui accueille quelque 60 millions de visiteurs par an, espère aussi que le musée dopera le tourisme vers Liberty et Ellis Island, accessibles par le même billet de ferry depuis la pointe sud de Manhattan.
Plusieurs grands noms de la philanthropie new-yorkaise et américaine vont aider à financer le musée, comme la créatrice de mode Diane von Furstenberg, marraine du projet, Jeff Bezos, fondateur d’Amazon, ou Michael Bloomberg, ex-maire de New York.

The Statue of Liberty will soon celebrate its 130th anniversary, and with it plans for NYC’s newest museum have been announced.
A new 20,000-square-foot museum is in the works near the statue that would accommodate far more people than the current exhibition space in the statue’s pedestal, according to the Wall Street Journal.
The museum will increase public access to exhibits on the history, construction and legacy of the statue, as well as provide additional shelter during inclement weather, according to an environmental review the National Park Service released last month cited by the Journal.
“We like it. We just can’t fit enough people in it,” John Piltzecker, the park service’s superintendent of the Statue of Liberty National Monument and Ellis Island, told the Journal.
If plans are approved for the site on the northwest side of the island, it will take two years to build.
The museum would be privately funded with designer and philanthropist Diane von Furstenberg and her billionaire husband Barry Diller backing the effort.

Diane von Furstenberg Will Help Fund New Statue of Liberty Museum

Fashion designer Diane von Furstenberg and husband Barry Diller are well known in the philanthropic circuit as supporters of cultural public spaces. They were early funders of the High Line, and construction is soon to commence on Diller’s $150 million+ futuristic offshore park known as Pier 55. Their latest endeavor will be backing a new Statue of Liberty museum, as the Wall Street Journal reports that von Furstenberg has joined the board of the Statue of Liberty-Ellis Island Foundation and agreed to assist with fundraising.
The site proposed for the museum is on the northwest side of Liberty Island, across the plaza from the statue. A sloping green roof with native vegetation is planned for the new building, along with a gallery area, immersive theater, bookstore, and administrative space. The building could accommodate 1,000 to 1,200 visitors per hour, more than double what’s currently allowed in the pedestal.
No cost estimates have been released, but the project will be privately funded. The Journal uncovered von Furstenberg’s name in a quarterly report from the foundation, though her office wouldn’t confirm her involvement. It’s still in the quiet fundraising and conceptual/planning phases, but if approved will likely take about two years to complete.
