If science has no country, the scientist should have one, and ascribe to it the influence which his works may have in this world. Louis Pasteur Speech at the Inauguration of the Institute Pasteur (1888). Quoted in René Vallery-Radot, The Life of Pasteur (1923).

Because knowledge is power when facing a global pandemic, a deadly health crisis putting our very own lives at serious risk… As we keep hearing about the #CoronavirusCOVID19 from people with no medical degree in the United States… As of 02/20/20 for the latest update… Let’s hear it from our very best, brightest, REAL scientists starting with the dedicated doctors and researchers, leaders in the field — and honoring Louis PASTEUR’s legacy — who are working non stop as we speak to develop a vaccine at the world-renowed INSTITUT PASTEUR in PARIS and LILLE, France, shall we, AMERICA? Latest news from the Institut Pasteur in Paris and Lille, France re: the deadly #CoronavirusCOVID19:

News 2020.02.26

Epidemiologie

During the weekend of February 22-23, 2020, the epidemic situation evolved worldwide with the intensification of outbreaks in South Korea, Japan and Singapore, and the appearance of new outbreaks in Iran and Italy. In these countries, we are witnessing a community transmission with no identified link with cases imported from China. This situation raises many questions. How is the disease diagnosed? What is the period of contagiousness? How long is the incubation? Etc. Here are the answers of the Institut Pasteur.

In December 2019, an outbreak of apparently viral pneumonia of unknown etiology emerged in the city of Wuhan, in the Chinese province of Hubei. A novel coronavirus (SARS-Cov2) is the pathogen responsible for this infectious respiratory disease called COVID-19 (CoronaVIrus Disease).

Press release

As well as sequencing the whole genome of coronavirus 2019-nCoV, the Institut Pasteur continued to work on the samples taken from the first confirmed cases. The quality of these initial samples enabled rapid cell-culture isolation of the new virus. The Institut Pasteur’s scientists now have access to the virus responsible for the infection. The isolation of the virus paves the way for new diagnostic, therapeutic and prophylactic approaches.
